The Composition of Pancreatic Juice and Blood Serum as Influenced by the Injection of Inorganic Salts

In the previous paper it was suggested that information concerning the permeability of the pancreatic tissue to the constituents of the blood serum could best be studied by determining the composition of pancreatic juice and serum during experimental variation in the composition of the latter. In that paper experiments were reported, in which acid and alkaline solutions were injected intravenously and the effect on the composition of the two fluids noted. It was found that the pH of pancreatic juice was practically not influenced by changes in the pH of the blood. In this paper it is proposed to report further studies on the permeability of the pancreatic tissue to other ions common to both fluids. Solutions of salts containing one or more of the following ions: sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and phosphate were injected into the blood stream and the composition of the serum and pancreatic juice before and after injection was determined.
